The history of the Station Hotel Dumfries

The Station HotelThe Station Hotel, Dumfries opened its doors to the public in June 1897.

Built on a site opposite the Railway Station, it was, from the outset, a first class hotel. The original specification even included such modern conveniences as electric lights, a passenger lift and central heating.

All the external walls are built with rock faced square dressed local sandstone. Construction of the hotel for the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company was by local, Glasgow and Belfast firms.

Through its ownership by the railways the hotel built up a reputation locally and was frequented regularly by the County set, it being the place to be seen.

The Station Hotel was purchased in 1972 by Mr Hal McGhie, a local businessman and the present owner.

The business mix for the hotel has changed since it was first constructed and with the additions of the Bistro Restaurant and the introduction of a fine dining restaurant the hotel now offers a variety of dining experiences and excellent value. A new Garden Room, built using Locharbriggs sandstone, has also been added with the help of a Feng Shui consultant employed to increase the chi (good feeling) for guests using the hotel.

We are certain that in 2097, the hotel will still be serving visitors and the local populace alike - perhaps still retaining a flavour of the times of gentle travel and great railways.
